Farewell Soap

Soap is now a building site
NIGHTLIFE in Canterbury is criticised heavily by students for not being as good as it could be. With only two nightclubs now in the city students are becoming bored.

The closure of Studio 41 otherwise known as Soap has left the city with one less club; this means that all students are restricted to one of the two clubs, either Chill or Club Chemistry. Canterbury is home to thousands of students from different universities and colleges, the clubs capacity is not overly that high so some students find themselves missing out.

Student Beth Gwynne said: “We live right next door to Chemistry so it’s not a problem for us to get in but because we live so close we leave really early because it’s so boring and going to bed sounds more appealing.”

Many argue that the nights out are becoming predictable and are therefore reluctant to spend the money on alcohol and getting into the club.

Tavina Nyirenda, student at University of Kent said: “When we started we went out about three times a week, now we rarely go out once because it’s so expensive and the nights out here aren’t very good.”

Individuals heading to university this year are of course interested in what the nightlife is like and it is safe to say Canterbury is not the best of all cities and this is a reason that some people are not choosing to come to university here.

Putting Canterbury Christ Church as one of his university options, Zac Eddie said: “I put it because the course looked good, I went on an open day about a month ago and asked about the night life; the person I asked said it was terrible, that’s really making me think twice about choosing it as a final option.”

Due to the fact that there are so many students in Canterbury and therefore a massive demand for a new club, things may change in the future and a new exciting nightlife might appear in the city.
